RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHANGEABLE-MESSAGE CONCEPT FOR FREEWAY TRAFFIC CONTROL
THESE METHODS WERE USED TO INVESTIGATE DRIVER RESPONSES TO MESSAGE CONCEPTS: (1) THE UCLA SIGN TESTER - A TABLE TOP SIMULATOR, (2) THE PREVIEW HOUSE - A MOTION-PICTURE THEATER, AND (3) THE UCLA DRIVING SIMULATION LABORATORY-- AN INSTRUMENTAL RESEARCH FACILITY. IT WAS FOUND THAT (1) MESSAGES SHOULD BE SHORT AND SIMPLE; (2) ADVANCE MESSAGES SHOULD BE ACCURATE; (3) DRIVERS PREFERRED KNOWING ABOUT LANE BLOCKAGE, DISTANCE OF BLOCKAGE, TIME DELAY EXPECTED, REASON FOR DELAY, AND LOCATION - RAMP OR INTERCHANGE NUMBER - OF DELAY SITUATION; (1) MISUNDERSTANDINGS RESULTED FROM USING LANE NUMBERS, INSTEAD OF RIGHT, LEFT, CENTER OR MIDDLE LANES; AND (5) INFORMATION ON NORMAL TRAFFIC FLOW IS DESIRED.
