GAP ACCEPTANCE AS A CRITERION FOR LEFT TURN PHASING
A SIMPLE STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTION IS USED TO SHOW THAT GAP ACCEPTANCE CAN BE UTILIZED AS A DECISION MAKING TOOL FOR INSTALLATION OF A LEFT TURN PHASE AT A SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION. ACCEPTANCE OF LONGER GAPS RESULTS IN LONGER QUEUES AND THUS INCREASES THE DELAYS TO LEFT TURNING VEHICLES. THE CAPACITY OF LEFT TURNS ARE REDUCED SHARPLY WHEN OPPOSING TRAFFIC VOLUME EXCEEDS 1,000 VEHICLES PER HOUR. THE DELAYS AND PROPORTION OF VEHICLES DELAYED INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN OPPOSING TRAFFIC HAS A VOLUME OF 1,000- OVER VEHICLES PER HOUR. IN ORDER TO APPLY THIS METHOD SUCCESSFULLY, AVERAGE CRITICAL GAP SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED FOR SEVERAL INTERSECTIONS OF SIMILAR CHARACTERISTICS IN A CITY OR A METROPOLITAN AREA. /AUTHOR/
