WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE ACCIDENT?
IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT 40% OF HIGHWAY ACCIDENT FATALITIES COULD BE SAVED BY MODERNIZING ALL ELEMENTS OF THE TRAFFIC CRASH RESPONSE, WHILE 25% OF THOSE PERMANENTLY DISABLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS WOULD NOT BE CRIPPLED. THE CRITICAL FACTORS ARE RESPONSE TIME, CARE AT THE SCENE AND EN ROUTE TO AN EMERGENCY FACILITY, AND TRAVEL TIME. MILITARY AND CIVILIAN EXPERIENCE WITH THE USE OF HELICOPTERS AS FLYING EMERGENCY WARDS IS DESCRIBED; FUNCTIONS, ADMINISTRATION, AND COSTS ARE DISCUSSED, AND POSSIBLE CONSTRAINTS IN VARIOUS TYPES OF TERRAIN AND CLIMATE ARE MENTIONED.
