GRADE CROSSINGS: THE SAFETY RECORD IMPROVES
ACCIDENT DEATHS HAVE DECLINED FOR RAILROAD/HIGHWAY GRADE- CROSSINGS. THUS, IMPROVEMENTS IN CROSSING SAFETY ARE A RESULT OF (1) A MORE SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO THE GRADE- CROSSING SAFETY PROBLEM, (2) BETTER DRIVER EDUCATION COURSES, (3) MORE FUNDING FROM GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, (4) BETTER CROSSING-PROTECTION EQUIPMENT FOR MORE RELIABLE OPERATION, (5) IMPROVED SIGNS AND MARKINGS, AND (6) IMPROVEMENTS IN MOTOR VEHICLES SO THAT THEY RESPOND MORE QUICKLY TO DRIVERS' ACTIONS. THE SPIRALLING COSTS OF PROVIDING ADEQUATE PROTECTION--MAINTENANCE, EQUIPMENT, ETC.--ARE GIVEN.
