ROADWAY DELINEATION SYSTEMS

THIS IS A DIGEST OF A STUDY INTENDED TO AID TRAFFIC ENGINEERS IN PROVIDING IMPROVED PAVEMENT AND ROADWAY DELINEATION SYSTEMS. THE STUDY PRODUCED A COMPREHENSIVE STATE-OF-THE-ART SUMMARY; A DEFINITION OF THE DELINEATION REQUIREMENTS IN VARIOUS HIGHWAY SITUATIONS; A DEFINITION OF BASIC DELINEATION CONCEPTS SUBSTANTIATED BY FIELD TEST DATA; ASSESSMENT OF VARIOUS DELINEATION TREATMENT EVALUATORY TECHNIQUES; GUIDELINES FOR HIGHWAY ENGINEERS; AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DELINEATION OF "CLASSIC" GEOMETRIC SITUATIONS. LABORATORY AND FIELD RESEARCH INDICATE THE NECESSITY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TASK FORCE TO PROVIDE IMPETUS FOR CONTINUING STUDY WITHIN THE STATE AND THE RELIANCE ON SUBJECTIVE EVALUATION METHODS. MAJOR CHANGES IN DELINEATION TREATMENTS IN SPECIFIC SITUATIONS CAN PRODUCE MEASURABLE CHANGES IN INTERMEDIATE EFFECTIVENESS CRITERIA; THE LATTER ARE NOT SENSITIVE ENOUGH TO MEASURE THE EFFECTS OF MINOR VARIANTS WITHIN TREATMENTS. GREATER CONCERN FOR COMPLIANCE WITH BASIC ROADWAY DELINEATION PRINCIPLES THAN WITH MINOR VARIATION IN TREATMENT, AND MORE ATTENTION TO LEAST-COST SOLUTIONS IS NEEDED. THE "GUIDELINES FORMS" PRESENT A METHODOLOGY FOR RESOLVING DELINEATION PROBLEMS AND SPECIFIC CHECKLISTS AND WORKSHEETS FOR "CLASSIC" GEOMETRIC SITUATIONS ARE PROVIDED. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR APPLICATIONS OF DELINEATION TREATMENTS AT HORIZONTAL CURVES, NO-PASSING ZONES, PAVEMENT WIDTH TRANSITIONS, MERGE AND DIVERGE AREAS, TURNS, AND STOP APPROACHES ARE PROVIDED. PAVEMENT MARKINGS, POST-DELINEATE RAISED PAVEMENT MARKERS, COLORED PAVEMENTS, RUMBLE STRIPS, CONTRASTING SHOULDERS, AND SYSTEMS OF DELINEATION TREATMENTS ARE ALSO CONSIDERED.
