DEVELOPMENT ON INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS AND TRANSMISSION TECHNIQUES FOR HIGHWAY USERS

INFORMATION NEEDED BY THE DRIVER TO PERFORM THE DRIVING TASK IS DEFINED. AN ANLAYSIS OF THE DRIVING TASK SHOWS THAT NEEDS FALL INTO A HIERARCHY OF TRACKING AND SPEED CONTROL, DRIVER RESPONSES TO ROAD AND TRAFFIC SITUATIONS, AND DIRECTION FINDING AND TRIP PLANNING. THE ROLE OF SIGNS, AS WELL AS THE DESIGN AND USE OF FIXED HIGHWAY SIGNING, IS ANALYZED IN DETAIL. ALSO, THE DESIGN OF SIGNS FOR NIGHT LEGIBILITY IS PRESENTED, INCLUDING A COMPUTER PROGRAM DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE NIGHT LEGIBILITY OF SIGNS AND THE VARIATION OF LEGIBILITY IN RELATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOMETRICAL PARAMETERS. MATHEMATICAL MODELS WERE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE BLOCKAGE OF SIGNS BY TRUCKS. IN ADDITION, THE EFFECT OF LATERAL DISPLACEMENT OF SIGNS ON REQUIRED LETTER HEIGHT WAS STUDIED.
