STUDIES OF TRAFFIC JAMS AS A CONTRIBUTION TO TRAFFIC PLANNING AND CONTROL /IN GERMAN/
IN 1968 TRAFFIC JAMS WERE RECORDED ON 40% OF 4000 KM OF GERMAN MOTORWAY UNDER OBSERVATION. THE DATA OBTAINED ENABLED THE EFFECT OF THE JAMS ON TRAFFIC FLOW TO BE EVALUATED. INFORMATION IS GIVEN ON THE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE TRAFFIC JAMS, AND THE CAUSES OF THEM. FOR THE EVALUATION A STANDARD TRAFFIC JAM IS ESTABLISHED, WHICH IS A BLOCK OF 1 KM LONG LASTING ONE HOUR ON A TWO-LANE ROAD. THIS ENABLED THE VARIOUS EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC JAMS TO BE ESTABLISHED. TRAFFIC JAMS CAUSED BY OVERLOADING OF THE SECTION OF ROAD USUALLY CREATED THE GREATEST DISTURBANCES. /TRRL/
