MAXIMUM DRIVING PERFORMANCE - CAN IT BE PREDICTED
AN APPROACH IS MADE TO THE PROBLEM OF INTER-SUBJECT VARIABILITY IN MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE ACHIEVED IN SEVERAL DRIVING TASKS, AND ITS RELATIONS TO SPONTANEOUS ACTIVITY IN THE AUTOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM. SPONTANEOUS ACTIVITY WAS MEASURED IN THE LABORATORY WHILE THE SUBJECTS WERE RESTING. AFTER APPROPRIATE DATA ANALYSIS, EACH SUBJECT WAS ASSIGNED A NUMBER CALLED THE AUTOMATIC STABILITY RANK WHICH REPRESENTED THE COMBINED SPONTANEOUS ACTIVITY IN HEART RATE AND SKIN RESISTANCE. THE SUBJECTS PARTICIPATED AFTERWARDS IN A DRIVING EXPERIMENT CONSISTING OF OPEN ROAD VELOCITY PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE, STEADY-STATE CAR-FOLLOWING AND TRANSIENT CAR-FOLLOWING TASKS. IT WAS SHOWN THAT PERFORMANCE IN SEVERAL DRIVING TASKS APPEARED TO BE RELATED TO THE LEVEL OF SPONTANEOUS AUTOMATIC ACTIVITY OBSERVED IN THE SUBJECTS AT REST. /TRRL/
