Experience with skid resistance prediction based on traffic simulation

Several research projects have shown that the Wehner/Schulze-method is a good tool for testing polishing resistance of mineral aggregates and for skid resistance prediction of asphalt mixes and cement concrete surfaces. This method consisting of traffic simulation and skid resistance measurement is explained in detail. A test section on the German Motorway A70 near Bamberg consisting of 25 test fields was observed during a period of 10 years in order to register the development of surface properties especially skid resistance. The test fields were built by varying the wearing course only. Asphalt concrete and stone mastic asphalt with different maximum grain size and with mineral aggregates of varying polishing resistance were tested. Furthermore mixes of aggregates with high and low polishing resistance were tested. Asphalt samples were taken from the construction site and were compacted by hand roller in laboratory. Cores were taken from the compacted wearing course as well. These surfaces were subjected to traffic simulation and skid resistance measurement by the Wehner/Schulze-method. Skid resistance results from laboratory test were compared to results from measurements with SCRIM and Stuttgarter Reibungsmesser on the wearing course under real traffic and climatic condition. The results represent a first step to skid resistance prediction.
