MEETING FUTURE EMISSION STANDARDS WITH LEADED FUELS

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES FEDERAL EXHAUST EMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR 1975 AND 1976, AND THE DISADVANTAGES THAT ARISE FROM USING THE SUGGESTED UNLEADED FUELS. THE PROPOSAL OF THE ETHYL CORPORATION IS TO RETAIN THE ADVANTAGES OF HIGH-COMPRESSION ENGINES AND LEADED FUELS BY DEVISING A FUEL METERING SYSTEM THAT PERMITS OPERATION ON A VERY LEAN MIXTURE. A THREE-VENTURI CARBURETTOR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED THAT IS CLAIMED TO GIVE FUEL ATOMIZATION AND AIR MIXING; WHEN USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH INSULATED EXHAUST PARTS AND STAINLESS STEEL REACTOR MANIFOLDS, IT VERY NEARLY MEETS THE FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS. DEVELOPMENT WORK IS IN PROGRESS FOR FURTHER REDUCTION IN EXHAUST GAS EMISSION USING THIS LEAN- REACTOR SYSTEM.
