FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE MODAL CHOICE

PREVIOUS STUDIES OF FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE CHOICE OF TRANSPORTATION MODE ARE REVIEWED AND THESE FINDINGS ARE SUPPLEMENTED WITH A CONSENSUS OF THE OPINIONS OF PROFESSIONAL PLANNERS AND ENGINEERS. THE PUBLIC PLACED MORE EMPHASIS THAN THE TRANSPORTATION PLANNERS DID ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ARRIVING BY THE SHORTEST DISTANCE, PROVIDING MUSIC, HAVING PACKAGE AND BAGGAGE SPACE, AND HAVING PRIVACY. HOWEVER, THE PLANNERS GAVE HIGHER IMPORTANCE RATINGS THAN THE PUBLIC TO PROTECTION FROM WEATHER WHILE WAITING, TRAFFIC CONGESTION, AND NO CROWDING ON VEHICLE. THE BIGGEST DIVERGENCE OF OPINION AMONG PLANNING OFFICIALS IS THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS SUCH AS EMPLOYMENT DENSITY, NUMBER OF CARS PER DWELLING UNIT, RESIDENTIAL DENSITY, AND NUMBER OF PEOPLE PER DWELLING UNIT IN PRESICTING TRANSIT USAGE. THIS MAY BE ATTRIBUTABLE TO A CHANGING VIEW AMONG PLANNERS THAT MORE SYSTEMS ATTRIBUTES AND BEHAVIORAL FACTORS NEED TO BE INCORPORATED INTO MODAL-SPLIT MODELS.
