LOW EMISSION GAS TURBINE PASSENGER CAR?
TODAY'S TURBINE ENGINES CAN MEET THE HC AND CO REGULATIONS BUT EXCEED THE ALLOWABLE LEVEL FOR NO SUB X BY AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE. IF THE TURBINE ENGINE COMBUSTOR CAN BE REDESIGNED TO REDUCE THE NO SUB X THEN THE TURBINE MAY BE ABLE TO MEET ALL THE EMISSION LAWS WITHOUT ANY OF THE ADD-ON CATALYTIC CONVERTORS, AFTERBURNERS OR AIR PUMPS THAT MAY BE NEEDED FOR THE PISTON ENGINE. PROBLEMS WHICH MUST BE SOLVED BEFORE THE COMBUSTOR IS PRACTICAL FOR AUTOMOTIVE GAS TURBINE ENGINES INCLUDE EMISSION PERFORMANCE DURING IGNITION AND DURING TRANSIENT ENGINE OPERATION; RAPID RESPONSE AND EXACT CONTROL OF THE COMBUSTOR VARIABLE GEOMETRY WITH ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS; AND EFFECT OF MANUFACTURING VARIABILITY ON EMISSION PERFORMANCE.
