APT testing and visco-elastic analysis of asphalt motorway pavements

This paper presents the investigation into the resilient and rutting behavior of two asphalt motorway test pavements subjected to LINTRACK loadings. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the possibility of back calculating the measured rutting behavior in the test pavements on the basis of cyclic triaxial tests. The calculation of the resilient and permanent deformation was performed using the multi-layer linear visco-elastic program VEROAD and was based on modeled material behavior determined from the resilient and permanent deformation triaxial tests. The resilient deformation triaxial tests were conducted for various stress levels, temperatures and frequencies. The permanent deformation triaxial tests were performed at 40ºC for a variety of combinations of allaround confinement stress and vertical pulse stress (of duration 0.2 or 0.05 seconds). The investigation showed that the measured resilient and permanent deformation exhibited different trends. The measured resilient deformation in the two test pavements was of different magnitudes while the measured permanent deformation was of similar magnitudes. The investigation also showed that the resilient and permanent deformation in the load axis which was calculated from triaxial testing was much lower than the measured resilient and permanent deformation in the pavement.
