Full scale accelerated pavement testing: a southern hemisphere and Asian perspective

In 1996, NCHRP Synthesis 235 defined full scale accelerated pavement testing (APT) as the controlled application of a prototype wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit to a prototype or actual, layered, structural pavement system to determine pavement response and performance under a controlled, accelerated, accumulation of damage in a compressed time period. At that time there were 35 accelerated pavement testing (APT) facilities around the world, of which 19 had active research programs in place. Since then there has been an increase in interest in this approach to pavement research and a move to enhance national and international interaction amongst the research teams and programs. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in accelerated pavement testing (APT) in the Southern Hemisphere (Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Southern Africa) and Asia (Korea, Japan, Peoples' Republic of China). Included is background information on each facility, together with a summary of work conducted over the last 4 to 5 years. An attempt is also made to identify any trends, and future initiatives, common to the Southern Hemisphere and Asia respectively.
