BEHAVIOR AND TRANSIT VEHICLE DESIGN
RIDER SATISFACTION WITHIN THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT VEHICLE HAS TWO COMPONENTS: PHYSIOLOGICAL CLIMATE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS FROM INTIMATE CONTACT WITH STRANGERS. THE DOUBLE OR MULTIPLE SEAT IMPOSES A MAXIMUM OF INTIMATE BODY CONTACT. IT MAGNIFIES INCOMPATIBILITIES AMONG SEATMATES WHO ARE CHANCE VICTIMS OF EACH OTHERS SIZE, ELBOWS, STATES OF CLOTHING, BREATH, PREJUDICE AND VARIABLE CODES OF SELF- DISCIPLINE. THE PRIVATE VEHICLE PROVIDES INSULATION AGAINST THESE CHANCE VARIABLES OF MAN/MAN INTERFACE. IF PUBLIC TRANSIT IS TO OFFER SERIOUS COMPETITION TO THE CONGESTED EXPRESSWAY IT MUST OFFER SOME FACTOR OF INSULATION AGAINST PERSON/PERSON INTERFACE. A SINGLE SEAT AT ANGULAR AXIS PROMISES ALLEVIATION OF PERSON/ PERSON INTERFACE.
