North American fatigue management program (FMP) for commercial motor carriers: Alberta and Texas pilots
This presentation will report on the results of a pilot study of a Fatigue Management Program (FMP), designed specifically for the motor carrier industry. This presentation reports on some of the results of the pilot tests conducted in Alberta and Texas. The pilot study involved the development of a FMP, collection of pre-FMP data, implementation of the FMP interventions, collection of post-FMP data, and analysis and reporting of results and recommendations. The FMP pilot implementation was carried out in an actual operational environment with drivers working on revenue generated routes. By the end of the intervention period (about 12 months) the drivers treated for sleep apnea improved their sleep by 73 percent. Fatigue levels were reduced by 67 percent. It can be concluded that: the Phase II experience showed that a comprehensive, integrated FMP can be successful in an operational environment; the success of the FMP relied on the close consultative nature of the implementation; this approach can be considered a best practice that can be applied to the commercial motor carrier industry.
