PEDESTRIAN ZONE IN MUNICH: MOTIVATION FOR PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT

MUNICH HAS AT PRESENT A POPULATION OF APPROXIMATELY 1.3 MILLION WITHIN ITS MUNICIPAL BOUNDARY AND A FURTHER 300,00 LIVING OUTSIDE THE CITY, BUT DIRECTLY CONNECTED WITH IT IN DAILY LIFE. ITS TRANSPORTATION NETWORK IS CHARACTERIZED BY: A COMMUTER RAILWAY (S-BAHN) WITH AN UNDERGROUND SECTION, WHICH ENABLES ACCESS INTO THE VERY HEART OF THE CITY; AN UNDERGROUND RAILWAY (U-BAHN); A STREETCAR SYSTEM; A BUS SYSTEM; AND AN IRREGULAR RADIAL STREET NETWORK, WHICH IS STILL INCOMPLETE. DIFFICULTIES WITH VEHICULAR AND STREETCAR TRAFFIC IN THE CENTER OF THE CITY LED TO THE DECISION TO DEVELOP A PEDESTRIAN ZONE. ITS CONSTRUCTION WAS TACTICALLY COMBINED WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF BOTH UNDERGROUND SYSTEMS. THE PEDESTRIAN ZONE BECAME ITSELF A NEW MOTIVATION FOR PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT. ITS ATMOSPHERE WAS EVOLVED USING VARIOUS TECHNICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES, SUCH AS TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES, TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN SURROUNDING STREETS, PARKING, FUNCTIONAL DIVISION OF AREA, ARTISTIC AND FLOWER DECORATION, STREET LIGHTING, FOUNTAINS, PAVEMENT, RESTAURANTS, KIOSKS, ETC. THERE WERE TWO TYPES OF MEASUREMENTS UNDERTAKEN THIS SUMMER. THE FIRST SHOWED THAT THE TWO DIFFERENT MOTIVATION GROUPS - WORK, BUSINESS, AND SHOPPING ON ONE HAND AND ENTERTAINMENT ON THE OTHER HAND-ARE REFLECTED IN THE DIFFERENT SPEED OF PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT. THE SECOND, ENVIRONMENTAL MEASUREMENT, ILLUSTRATES THAT THE INTRODUCTION OF PEDESTRIAN ZONES IN THE CITY CENTER, AS AN ISOLATED ARRANGEMENT, CAN IMPROVE ONLY LOCALLY CAUSED DIFFICULTIES IN THE PURITY OF THE AIR AND IN NOISE CONDITIONS IN THE WHOLE CITY CENTER.
