ARIZONA PROVING GROUNDS HOST MEMBERS OF HRB'S VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS COMMITTEE

IN SEPTEMBER 1972 THE COMMITTEE VISITED THREE FIELD FACILITIES IN ARIZONA TO OBSERVE DEMONSTRATIONS OF TEST PROGRAMS. AT THE PROVING GROUNDS OF THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY THE DEMONSTRATION INCLUDED THE USE OF TRANSDUCERS TO RECORD TRACTION CHARCTERISTICS OF VEHICLES ON THE TEST TRACK, VEHICLE HANDLING, WET AND DRY SURFACE BRAKING AND HANDLING TESTING, AND EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR NOISE TESTING. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TOUR OF THE DYNAMIC SCIENCE DIVISION OF ULTRASYSTEMS, INC, WAS A BARRIER CRASH OF A SMALL FOREIGN CAR ON THE 1200-FOOT MONORAIL. TECHNICAL PAPERS ON CRASHWORTHINESS WERE ALSO PRESENTED. THE TOUR OF THE GENERAL MOTORS DESERT PROVING GROUND INCLUDED INSPECTION OF, SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT FOR MEASURING VEHICLE AND COMPONENT PERFORMANCE AND A REVIEW OF TYPICAL ROAD TESTS.
