THE TRAFFIC ENGINEERS RESPONSE TO VEHICLE CHANGE
VEHICLE DESIGN AND CAPABILITY ARE OF GREAT INTEREST TO THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER, AS THEY AFFECT INTERSECTION CAPACITY, GEOMETRIC DESIGN CRITERIA, SAFETY MEASURES, AND SO ON. IN THE ABSENCE OF A RELIABLE, MASS-PRODUCED SAFETY VEHICLE, HIGHWAY AND TRAFFIC ENGINEERS MUST COMPENSATE FOR VEHICLE DESIGN DEFICIENCIES BY MAKING THE HIGHWAY MORE "FOREGIVING." THREE AREAS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE ARE SKID REDUCTION, DRIVER VISIBILITY, AND HIGHWAY CRASHWORTHINESS. PROBLEMS OF THE FUTURE ARE TREATED UNDER THE TOPICAL HEADINGS ENGINES, BRAKING AND HANDLING, VISIBILITY, AUDIO CUES, AUTOMATIC VEHICLE CONTROL, SPEED AND TRAVEL, AND BICYCLES. TRENDS ARE IDENTIFIED, AND THE IMPACT OF THE CHANGES ON TRAFFIC AND DESIGN ENGINEERS IS DISCUSSED.
