I-C ENGINE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

MAJOR DESIGN CHANGES MUST BE MADE IN THE MORE THAN 100 MILLION INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES TO BE BUILT OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS IF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION IS TO BE MINIMIZED. SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS DISCUSSED INCLUDE MINOR MODIFICATIONS OF REDUCING ENGINE SIZE AND POWER OUTPUT, IMPROVING CARBURETORS AND MANIFOLDS, AND ELIMINATING LEAD IN GASOLINE. MORE DRASTIC MODIFICATIONS CENTER ON A FUEL-INJECTION SYSTEM AND STRATIFIED-CHARGE OPERATION. FUTURE LEGISLATION SHOULD GIVE CONSIDERATION TO ADDITIONAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT NEEDED TO PROVIDE DATA NECESSARY TO SET REASONABLE STANDARDS AND TO DEVELOP ENGINES TO MEET THESE STANDARDS. /AUTHOR/
