The Laserlux is here: a tool for high speed roadmarking surveys
The night visibility of roadmarkings is measured by an instrument known as a retroreflectometer. Mobile Laser Technology Pty Ltd based in Melbourne have purchased a Laserlux 6 mobile retroreflectometer, which is available to carry out measurements in Australia and New Zealand. The Laserlux hardware has been installed in a purpose built van. Laserlux takes readings at highway speeds. The light source is a laser beam which means the instrument can be used during day or night, and is unaffected by extraneous light sources, such as overhead lighting or headlights of approaching vehicles. Measurements are made around nine times per second, consisting of 200 sample points for each measurement. Either one of two lines can be scanned. A video overlay can be incorporated with the readings showing the two in real time. Reported readings can be provided on hard copy or on a CD. This paper looks at the measurement system, and the output information that can assist contractors and road owners in better asset management.
