HIGHWAY ANTI-GLARE SCREENS OFFER MULTIPLE BENEFITS
TESTS ARE DESCRIBED IN WHICH ANTI-GLARE STEEL MESH SCREENS HAVE BEEN USED TO REDUCE HEADLIGHT GLARE AND ALSO TRAFFIC NOISE IN PENNSYLVANIA, CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK. AT THE TEST SITE IN PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE 49IN HIGH, 121/2 FT LONG. STEEL SCREENS WERE ERECTED ON 217 MILES OF GALVANIZED STEEL-BOX GUARDRAIL. IT WAS FOUND THAT, (1) THE GLARE SCREEN REDUCED ACCIDENT FREQUENCY, (2) THE SCREEN DID NOT ADVERSELY AFFECT TRAFFIC FLOW, (3) NIGHT DRIVING COMFORT WAS IMPROVED, (4) HEADLIGHT GLARE WAS REDUCED, AND (5) THE SCREEN WAS FOUND TO REDUCE DAMAGE TO CARS. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT DRIVERS SHOWED EXTRA CARE WHEN DRIVING ON BENDS FITTED WITH ANTI-GLARE BARRIERS. /TRRL/
