Transport disadvantage and social status: a Gold Coast pilot study

The first part of this pilot project involved a major literature and methodological review. It drew on previous studies and methods used to investigate the relationship between transport systems and the spatial geography of various potentially disadvantaged socio-economic groups. It found that social scientific literature supports the proposition that transport systems can exacerbate social disadvantage. It urged the further development of method(s) to examine the dynamics of transport, social status and disadvantage. This research monograph builds on its predecessor. It undertakes a preliminary investigation of public transport and the spatial distribution of vulnerable social groups on the Gold Coast. It develops a methodology to account for a greater range of factors in the construction of transport disadvantage. In particular the study examines the combination of spatial and temporal access in public transportation.
