The effect of lift thickness on time available for compaction of hot mix asphalt pavements
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of lift thickness on time available for compaction (TAC). Seven field test sections with different hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixes were constructed with each being about 40 m long and 3.5 m wide. Each test section was paved with thickness (t) to nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) ratio of 2.0 at the beginning of section and gradually increased to t/NMAS ratio of 5.0 at the end of the section. Thermocouples were installed in the mat to measure mix temperature and a thermo infra red heat gun was used for surface temperature. Reasonable and consistent compactive effort was applied throughout the sections regardless of the t/NMAS ratio. The results indicate that that the thinner the mix layer, the faster the mix cooled down, thus reducing the TAC. The TAC for 25 mm lift is 13 minutes, for 32 mm it is 23 minutes, for 38 mm thick it is 32 minutes, and for 44 mm and above, the TAC is expected to be more than 50 minutes.
