Development of new entrance ramp level of service chart based on an urban expressway traffic condition
The efficiency of traffic operations in an expressway ramp section is a key factor influencing the effectiveness of the whole expressway system. The level of service of ramp influence areas is an issue that needs to be understood in depth in order to achieve a sustainable urban expressway system. The ramp traffic demand is high in urban area such as in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur and, due to the dense population in the vicinity of the urban expressway corridor, leads towards congestion and breakdown phenomena. This paper discusses a successful field research project and presents the new level of service chart that mirrors the local traffic conditions for the entrance ramp junction. This research can be used as a starting basis towards the establishment of the Malaysian Highway Capacity Manual for uninterrupted flow facilities.
