LIGHTING AND ROAD TRAFFIC. 1. PUBLIC LIGHTING AND ROAD ACCIDENTS
INJURY ACCIDENT DATA HAVE BEEN COLLECTED FOR 60 SITES BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF PUBLIC LIGHTING TO GROUPS A1, A2 OR A3 OF BS CP1004:1963. SIGNIFICANT EFFECTIVE INJURY ACCIDENT REDUCTIONS DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS WERE FOUND TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF PUBLIC LIGHTING IN URBAN, RURAL AND TRUNK ROAD ENVIRONMENTS. FOR ECONOMIC ANALYSES UNDER BRITISH AND SIMILAR CONDITIONS, IT IS SUGGESTED THAT EFFECTIVE INJURY ACCIDENT REDUCTIONS DURING THE HOURS OF DARKNESS OF 30 PER CENT, 35 TO 40 PER CENT AND 30 PER CENT BE ASSUMED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PUBLIC LIGHTING FOR URBAN, RURAL AND TRUNK ROAD ENVIRONMENTS RESPECITIVELY (A).
