A SURVEY OF MEDICAL ASPECTS OF TRAFFIC SAFETY

UP TO 1950, LITTLE HAD BEEN DONE ABOUT MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT PREVENTION. HOWEVER, SERIOUS EFFORTS ARE NOW BEING MADE TO PREVENT MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS BY A GROWING NUMBER OF PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE WHO SET UP AN EPIDEMIOLOGY OF ACCIDENTS AND ADVOCATE THE EDUCATION OF THE DRIVING POPULATION AND DOCTORS BY HEALTH AUTHORITIES AS REGARDS SAFE DRIVING HABITS AND THE RELATION BETWEEN HEALTH AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY. A TRAFFIC MEDICINE ASSOCIATION SHOULD, IN IN THE FIELD OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE, DEVELOP MECHANISMS FOR THE PREVENTION OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, IN THE FIELD OF PUBLIC HEALTH, EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE MEDICAL ASPECTS OF TRAFFIC SAFETY AND DEVELOP PROGRAMS FOR THE REHABILITATION OF PERSONS WHO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE TRAFFIC MEDICINE PROGRAM AND A NEW COURSE ENTITLED 'HELP ON THE ROAD' DEVISED BY THE SWEDISH RED CROSS. /TRRL/
