Dust suppressants for Nordic gravel roads

The objective of this study is to evaluate dust suppressants and gravel wearing courses regarding dust control efficiency, longevity, leaching and penetration of dust suppressants, moisture retaining properties, and optimal aggregate size distribution. In addition, developing and evaluating adequate methods for analysing these properties are also within the purpose of the study. The methodology used includes literature reviews as well as laboratory and field investigations. The findings are expected to yield reduced life cycle costs for gravel roads and environmental benefits from reduced dust formation as well as reduce the exposure of chemicals to nature. The study is valid for the Nordic climate, design practices, gravel material, and maintenance tradition. However there are reasons to believe that the results are also valid for gravel roads in other countries when using these kinds of dust suppressants.
