ROADWAY LIGHTING

A COMPUTER PROGRAM WHICH PROVIDES A RELATIVELY SIMPLE MEANS OF COMBINING READILY AVAILABLE LAMP/LUMINAIRE CANDLE-POWER ARRAYS WITH PAVEMENT DIRECTIONAL REFLECTANCE DATA TO CALCULATE ILLUMINATION, PAVEMENT LUMINANCE, AND GLARE IS DESCRIBED. THE PROGRAM CALCULATES VALUES (AT INTERVALS SPECIFIED BY THE USER BETWEEN TWO ADJACENT LUMINAIRES) USING INPUT DATA THAT INCLUDES PAVEMENT DIRECTIONAL REFLECTANCE FACTORS, LAMP/LUMINAIRE CANDLEPOWER ARRAYS AND GEOMETRY OF THE SYSTEM. FOR LUMINANCE AND GLARE CALCULATION, THE OBSERVER MAY BE EITHER STATIC OR DYNAMIC. THE STATIC OBSERVER MAINTAINS A FIXED POSITION RELATIVE TO THE TEST POINTS, WHILE THE DYNAMIC OBSERVER TRAVELS THROUGH THE SYSTEM MAINTAINING A FIXED VIEWING SYSTEM DISTANCE. THE PROGRAM MAY ALSO CALCULATE VALUES FOR ONE OR ALL THE VARIABLES; A GRID SYSTEM OF VARIABLE SIZE MAY BE ESTABLISHED FOR EITHER A STATIC OR DYNAMIC OBSERVER; TEST SYSTEMS MAY INCLUDE ONE SIDE, OPPOSITE OR STAGGERED LUMINAIRE ARRANGEMENTS; EVALUATION PARAMETERS MAY BE SPECIFIED; CALCULATION RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF A PRINTOUT OF THE HIGHWAY GRID AND/OR SUMMARY TABLES; "OPTIMUM" DESIGN BASED UPON SYSTEM LIMITATIONS CAN BE PROVIDED. IT IS HOPED THAT THE PROGRAM, AN IBM 360-70 WRITTEN IN TWO VERSIONS (ONE FOR RESEARCH AND ONE FOR GENERAL USE) WILL BE OF USE TO THE PRACTICING ENGINEER IN PROVIDING AN IMPROVED NIGHT DRIVING ENVIRONMENT THROUGH BETTER ROADWAY LIGHTING.
