CONTROLLING SIGNAL INTESNITY AND UNIFORMITY TO IMPROVE SIGNAL VISIBILITY

THE MOST EFFECTIVE SIGNAL INDICATION IS CREATED WHEN THE OPTIMUM CONTRAST EXISTS BETWEEN THE LIGHT EMITTED BY THE SINGAL AND THE AMBIENT LIGHT IN ITS BACKGROUND. THE POTENTIAL RESULT OF CONTROLLING SOURCE INTENSITY TO PROVIDE OPTIMUM CONTRAST UNDER ANY AMBIENT LIGHTING CONDITION IS ONE OF THE BASIC CONCERNS OF THIS PAPER. ANOTHER METHOD FOR INCREASING VISIBILITY IS IMPROVING THE UNIFORMITY OF LIGHT DISTRIBUTION OF THE SIGNAL INDICATION THROUGH THE USE OF MORE SOPHISTICATED OPTICS. THESE TWO FACTORS ARE SHOWN TO RELATE TO CONDITIONS WHICH AFFECT VISIBILITY: SENSORY OVERLOAD AND GLARE, SIZE OF THE VISUAL IMAGE IN THE RETINA, LUMINANCE, CONTRAST, DISTANCE BETWEEN EYE AND SOURCE, COLOR, AND PLACEMENT OF THE INDICATOR.
