HIGH-MAST INTERCHANGE LIGHTING
IN ADDITION TO ITS OTHER ADVANTAGES, HIGH-MAST LIGHTING ELIMINATES THE GLARE RESULTING FROM WET PAVEMENT OR SUSPENDED WATER DROPLETS IN WET OR FOGGY WEATHER, AND RAISES TO A HEIGHT WHERE IT IS NO LONGER DISTRACTING THE HALO THAT SURROUNDS LUMINAIRES IN DAMP CONDITIONS. THIS ADVANTAGE IS PARTICULARLY VALUABLE IN RAINY CLIMATES. THE FIRST HIGH-MAST INSTALLATION IN OREGON IS AT A TRUMPET INTERCHANGE OF TWO INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS. A LUMINAIRE HEIGHT OF 125 FEET ABOVE THE ROAD SURFACE WAS CHOSEN. THE ELEMENTS OF THE LIGHTING SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED BRIEFLY. OVERALL COST WAS 6% HIGHER THAN THAT OF A CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM OFFERING ACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE. THIS SMALL COST DIFFERENTIAL, COUPLED WITH THE OPERATIONAL ADVANTAGES OF HIGH-MAST SYSTEMS, HAS LED THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO PLAN SUCH INSTALLATIONS FOR ALL MAJOR INTERSTATE JUNCTIONS WITH TRAFFIC LEVELS HEAVY ENOUGH TO WARRANT THEM.
