PHOTO CAPTION
A PICTURE IS SHOWN OF QUEBEC'S RICHELIEU BRIDGE, LOCATED ON THE EASTERN TOWNSHIPS AUTOROUTE, WHICH IS THE SITE OF NORTH AMERICA'S FIRST CATENARY LIGHTING INSTALLATION. THE SYSTEM INCLUDES CABLES, SLUNG FROM 200 OR 300 APART AND PARALLEL TO THE AXIS OF THE ROAD, WITH LUMINAIRES SUSPENDED ALONG THE CABLES AT REGULAR INTERVALS OF 40 FEET. CATENARY INSTALLATIONS, INTENDED TO FOLLOW THE CENTRAL MEDIAN OF A MULTI-LANE HIGHWAY, HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON MORE THAN 100 MILES OF THE EUROPEAN CONTINENT AND BRITISH HIGHWAYS, AS WELL AS ON NORMAL ROADS WITH LARGE TRAFFIC VOLUME. THE RICHELIEU BRIDGE SYSTEM, UTILIZING LOW-PRESSURE SODIUM LAMPS, BECAME OPERABLE THIS PAST AUGUST.
