DESIGN CONSIDERATION FOR A NEW PASSING BEAM
SIGHT-DISTANCE MEASUREMENT OF THE EUROPEAN H4 AND THE AMERICAN SAE J579A LOW BEAMS SHOWED A 40% ADVANTAGE FOR THE LATTER IN PICKING OUT OBSTACLES LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROADWAY. ANALYSIS OF THESE RESULTS INDICATES THAT (1) THE SUPERIORITY OF THE AMERICAN HEADLAMPS IS DUE TO THE LIGHT EMITTED IN DIRECTIONS IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE HORIZONTAL AND (2) THE LUMINANCE OF THE UPPER PART OF THE OBSTACLE IS DETERMINANT FOR DETECTION IN BOTH EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN HEADLIGHTS. ON THE BASIS OF THESE OBSERVATIONS A NEW TYPE OF HIGH BEAM DISTRIBUTION IS PROPOSED WHICH IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE GREATER SIGHT DISTANCES AND REDUCED GLARE UNDER PRACTICAL DRIVING CONDITIONS THAN ARE EXPERIENCED WITH EXISTING HEADLIGHTS. /AUTHOR/
