CAL DEVELOPS THREE-DIMENSIONAL COMPUTER SIMULATION OF CRASH VICTIM
CAL HAS DEVELOPED A THREE-DIMENSIONAL CRASH- SIMULATION MODEL THAT REPRESENTS THE VICTIM BY 15 JOINTED SEGMENTS WITH 40 DEGREES OF FREEDOM. BECAUSE THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN A GENERALIZED MANNER, IT CAN SIMULATE A VARIETY OF OCCURRENCES, E. G., PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS, AIR COLLISION, OR OCCUPANTS OF SPACE VEHICLES UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING. IT COSTS ONLY ABOUT $50 TO EXERCISE THE MODEL ON A COMPUTER. IMPACT-SLED AND PENDULUM TESTS HAVE BEEN USED TO VALIDATE THE MODEL, WHICH INCORPORATES A GRAPHIC-DISPLAY ROUTINE THAT MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO COMPARE MODEL RESULTS WITH PHOTOGRAPHED MOVEMENTS OF AN ANTHROPOMORPHIC DUMMY.
