The enhanced crash investigation study (ECIS)
In-depth crash data collected in a number of European and other international countries have been valuable in the design of safer vehicles by the auto industry and in developing new safety initiatives by governments. A new and innovative use of these detailed crash data has recently been developed in Australia for helping train road safety professionals. Details of individual crashes that occurred in particular regions including occupant, vehicle, site and triage and emergency transport characteristics were collected and presented to a panel of road safety stakeholders (traffic engineers, police, emergency service people, local government, community representatives, special interest groups, etc). The investigator's assessments of the likely factors associated with the crash were also included. Panel members then discussed these findings and arrived at a consensus of measures that could have prevented the crash from occurring. The final stage was to assign responsibilities to those present to rectify these anomalies and establish a timeline for intervention.
