Railway crossing safety

Recent tragic incidents in Australia with the death of rail passengers at Kerang in Victoria and the death of a pedestrian at a level crossing in Perth remind us of the importance of developing sound safety systems around road / rail and pedestrian crossings. The safety of both road and train users is the responsibility of all those involved, rail operators, road authorities, road users and those using the public transport system. Vehicle and rolling stock design, fatigue management, drug and alcohol control and health management are the responsibility of all those involved in the transport industry and those using both roads and the rail network. Supporting this needs to be effective community education and media campaigns to ensure the safety message and the risks around the rail system are driven home. This paper outlines the approach taken by the Public Transport Authority and discusses the improvement of level crossing safety.
