DYNET-DYNAMIC NETWORK ANALYSIS OF URBAN TRAFFIC FLOW
A COMPUTER PROGRAM, NAMED DYNET (DYNAMIC NETWORK ANALYSIS), WHICH SIMULATES THE MICROSCOPIC BEHAVIOR OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON A NETWORK OF URBAN STREETS, IS PRESENTED. THIS PROGRAM IS CODED IN FORTRAN IV AND HAS BEEN DESIGNED FOR THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER WHO HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FURNISHING THE OPTIMUM SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM TO SATISFY EXISTING AND PROJECTED TRAFFIC DEMAND. IT HAS THE CAPABILITY TO DESCRIBE TRAFFIC DYNAMICS ACCURATELY FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF FLOW CONDITIONS, BOTH FOR NETWORK CONFIGURATIONS AND URBAN ARTERIALS. DYNET CAN EVALUATE THE CAPABILITY OF AN EXISTING SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM TO PROCESS TRAFFIC EFFICIENTLY, AND ALSO PROVIDE THE DETAILED DATA WHICH WILL PERMIT THE DESIGN OF A STILL MORE EFFICIENT CONTROL SYSTEM. AS SUCH, THE PROGRAM ACTS AS AN ANALYTICAL DESIGN TOOL RATHER THAN BEING RESTRICTED TO THE ROLE OF MERELY DESCRIBING THE GROSS TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF AN URBAN AREA. THE STATISTICAL TESTS RELATING THE TRAFFIC PARAMETERS COMPUTED BY DYNET FOR THE NETWORK STUDIED, WITH THOSE OBTAINED FROM FIELD MEASUREMENTS, HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE PROGRAM ACCURATELY REPRODUCED THOSE MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE WHICH ARE OF PRIME INTEREST TO THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER. FURTHERMORE, THE DETAILED PICTURE OF TRAFFIC BEHAVIOR AT THE VARIOUS INTERSECTIONS, PROVIDED BY DYNET, PERMITS THE ENGINEER TO OPTIMIZE THE DESIGN OF SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEMS OVER A NETWORK OF URBAN STREETS. BY IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM FOR VARIOUS LEVELS OF SERVICE CORRESPONDING TO DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS THROUGHOUT THE DAY, A FLEXIBLE AND RESPONSIVE CONTROL SYSTEM MAY BE DEVELOPED RAPIDLY AND ECONOMICALLY. /AUTHOR/
