SINGLE LANE TRAFFIC FLOW CONTROL
EXPERIMENTS IN THE HOLLAND TUNNEL PREVIOUSLY REPORTED SHOWED PEAK TRAFFIC FLOW COULD BE INCREASED BY RINSERTING GAPS IN THE STREAM. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPED TO PERFORM THIS FUNCTION AUTOMATICALLY IS DESCRIBED AND ITS EFFECTIVENESS EVALUATED. EXTENSION OF THIS SYSTEM REQUIRES PREDICTING BEHAVIOR OF TRAFFIC PLATOONS, AND EXPERIMENTS WITH PLATOONS ARE REPORTED. THE GENERATION OF SHOCK WAVES HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN DETAIL, AND THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS TO FORESTALL SHOCK WAVE FORMATION ARE DISCUSSED.
