ON B-MODAL INTERVALS

THE MODE OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF A RANDOM SAMPLE IS DEFINED AS THE UNIQUE POINT AT WHICH THE DENSITY FUNCTION ATTAINS ITS MAXIMUM VALUE. LET X BE A RANDOM VARIABLE WITH DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION F. THE "WINDOW" ABOUT POINT X, IS OF A MAGNITUDE SUCH THAT THE DENSITY FUNCTION RISES BY AN AMOUNT B OVER THE WINDOW. B-MODAL INTERVALS ARE IMPORTANT AS AN INDICATION OF CONCENTRATION OF MASS. APPLICATIONS CAN BE FOUND IN CERTAIN AREAS OF OPERATIONS RESEARCH SUCH AS TRAFFIC FLOW, WHERE ONE SEEKS ESTIMATES ON THE LOCATION OF REGIONS OF PEAK FLOW. ESTIMATES FOR THE MODE OF DENSITY CHERNOFF, PARZEN, AND VENTER ARE NOT APPLICABLE IN MANY CASES SINCE THE MODE ITSELF MIGHT BE THE RESULT OF A MOMENTARY ABERRATION IN THE PHYSICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM. /AUTHOR/
