Sustainable urban planning and urban responses to climate change: a review of practices in the ACT, New South Wales and Victoria, Australia

Australia is a latecomer in ratifying the Kyoto Agreement at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Bali on 12 December 2007; yet in the early 1990s it was at the forefront of embracing "sustainability" of the urban and transport sectors. Natural disasters (drought, bush fires, storms and flooding) caused by climate change are increasing in frequency and intensity year by year and threaten the sustainability of Australian cities. We outline the context for climate change and cities with the national policies before and after the current Rudd Labor Government was elected to Federal Parliament in December 2007. Then, based on interviews with state governments we also describe the new institutional arrangements and state government policies that are emerging for mitigation and adaptation and risk assessment associated with climate change in cities.
