ON THE STABILITY OF TRAFFIC FLOW, REPORT NO 1
AN ANALYSIS IS MADE OF THE STABILITY OF A QUEUE OF VEHICLES MOVING ON A SINGLE LANE OF ROADWAY. EACH VEHICLE EXCEPT FOR THE LEAD VEHICLE IS ASSUMED TO OBEY A SPEED- SPACING RELATIONSHIP WHICH IS EXPRESSED BY A GIVEN EQUATION. STANDARD LAPLACE TRANSFORM TECHNIQUES ARE USED IN THE ANALYSIS. IN PARTICULAR, THREE SPECIFIC CASES ARE STUDIED: (1) THE LEAD VEHICLE FROM A STATIONARY POSITION INSTANTANEOUSLY MOVES AT A CERTAIN SPEED, (2) THE LEAD VEHICLE MOVING AT THE CERTAIN SPEED INSTANTANEOUSLY STOPS, AND (3) THE SPEED OF THE LEAD VEHICLE IS A SINUSOIDAL OSCILLATION ABOUT A CERTAIN SPEED, FREQUENCY AND AMPLITUDE. SOLUTIONS, IN THE FORM OF EXPANSIONS, ARE ALSO DERIVED FOR THE SPEED HISTORY OF A POSITIONED VEHICLE IN A PLATOON AND NUMERICAL EXAMPLES ARE ILLUSTRATED.
