AN ANALYSIS OF RAMP SERVICE TIME DISTRIBUTIONS BY MONTE CARLO SIMULATION
THIS RESEARCH STUDY IS CONCERNED WITH THE ANALYSIS OF ONLY ONE ASPECT OF THE RAMP-MERGING PROCESS -- NAMELY, THE DISTRIBUTION OF SERVICE TIMES FOR RAMP VEHICLES ATTEMPTING TO MERGE WITH THE FREEWAY TRAFFIC STREAM. MERGING OF RAMP AND FREEWAY TRAFFIC IS DESCRIBED AS A CLASSICAL QUEUEING PROBLEM. THE RAMP- FREEWAY MERGIN PROCESS; AND THE ASSOCIATED RAMP SERVICE TIMES, WERE STUDIED BY MEANS OF MONTE CARLO SIMULATION ON AN IBM 360/65 COMPUTER. /FHWA/
