VOL 1 - EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM TRAFFIC SIMULATION FOR THE DESIGN OF UNIFORM SERVICE ROADS IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN
EXPERIMENTAL TRAFFIC DATA WERE OBTAINED IN SUPPORT OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A SIMULATION MODEL OF TRAFFIC FLOW IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN. THE DATA WERE COLLECTED ON RURAL FOUR LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAYS AT TWO CALIFORNIA LOCATIONS. TIME LAPSE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND GROUND BASED TRAFFIC COUNTS AND SPEED MEASUREMENTS WERE OBTAINED ON THE "FIVE-MILE GRADE" (INTERSTATE 5) NORTH OF LOS ANGELES. TRAFFIC COUNTS AND SPEED MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ON THE "CORDELIA" GRADE (INTERSTATE 80) WEST OF SACRAMENTO. DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM THE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS ON LANE CHANGING AND VEHICLE SPEEDS IN PASSING. THE TRAFFIC COUNTS WERE USED TO ESTABLISH THE DISTRIBUTION OF VEHICLES TO LANE AS A FUNCTION OF TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND ROADWAY GRADES. THE SPEED MEASUREMENTS WERE USED TO DEFINE THE DISTRIBUTIONS OF UNIMPEDED VEHICLE SPEEDS AND THE EFFECTS OF PROLONGED GRADES ON THE DISTRIBUTIONS. /AUTHOR/
