STUDY OF THE OPERATIONAL ASPECTS OF ONE-WAY AND TWO-WAY STREETS

THIS STUDY IS A BEFORE-AND-AFTER EVALUATION OF THE TRAFFIC OPERATION IN FOUR MICHIGAN CITIES WHERE A STATE TRUNKLINE SERVING TWO-WAY TRAFFIC WAS CONVERTED TO ONE-WAY OPERATION. FIELD SURVEYS IN KALAMAZOO, LANSING, PONTIAC, AND PORT HURON WERE CONDUCTED FOR SPEED AND DELAY OF TRAFFIC ON THE PRINCIPAL ROUTES. FOR GAPS IN THE TRAFFIC STREAM, AND FOR TRAFFIC VOLUMES AND TURNING-MOVEMENTS. ACCIDENT REPORTS WERE REVIEWED AND ANALYZED. INCREASES OF UP TO 10.6 MILES PER HOUR WERE OBTAINED IN AVERAGE OVER-ALL SPEEDS DURING PEAK PERIODS. HIGHEST REDUCTION IN AVERAGE STOPS PER TRIP WAS FROM 6.3 TO 1.0.
