Cutback bitumen (metric units)
The present specification is the first revision of SABS 308:1951. Major modifications in the present specification are the omission of special requirements for cutback bitumen prepared from Torbanite bitumen and of the intermediate curing grades prepared from straight-run bitumen. The various viscosity grades of cutback bitumen have also been reclassified in terms of kinematic viscosity determined at 60 °C. The current grade designation signifies the lower limit of the kinematic viscosity for the grade, while the upper viscosity limit is twice the lower limit, e.g. MC-70 indicates a medium-curing grade which has a kinematic viscosity within the range of 70-140 centistokes at 60 °C. The major difference between the present and previous types of cutback bitumen is that the MC grades have a harder residue after distillation and a narrower distillation range. These modifications have proved over the years to give an improved product for use under South African climatic conditions. Although other grades and types are commercially available in each category or type, the number of cutback bitumen grades specified in the 1951 edition have been reduced to cover the number of grades that are actually in demand and that are being marketed in the Republic of South Africa.
