BUS LOCATION, COMMUNICATION AND CONTROL SYSTEM
A PROPOSAL IS PRESENTED FOR A BUS LOCATION, COMMUNICATION, AND CONTROL SYSTEM FOR THE CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (CTA) THAT WOULD PROVIDE BETTER SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC AT GREATER OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY. THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE SYSTEMS ARE THREEFOLD: (1) TO PROVIDE A SYSTEM WHICH WILL ENABLE THE C.T.A. MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS STAFF TO FULLY MEET A HIGH GOAL OF EFFICIENCY WITH RESPECT TO SCHEDULE, SERVICE, CONVENIENCE, HIGH-SPEED REACTION TO UNUSUAL AND EMERGENCY CONDITIONS, PERSONNEL RELATIONS AND EMPLOYMENT, AND COST EFFECTIVENESS; (2) TO PROVIDE A SYSTEM WHICH WILL ALLOW THE SIMPLE INTRODUCTION OF INCREASED PASSENGER VEHICLE COMPLEMENT, AND CHANGED OR ADDITIONAL OPERATING FACILITIES AND PROCEDURES, WITHOUT PENALTY OF ECONOMIC OR SERVICE EFFICIENCY; AND (3) TO PROVIDE A SYSTEM WITH GROWTH POTENTIAL WHICH WILL STIMULATE NEW OPERATING TECHNIQUES, AND PROVIDE NEW HORIZONS IN MASS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, THUS PRODUCING INCREASED SERVICE EFFICIENCY FOR THE PUBLIC. THE RAYTHEON SYSTEM WILL UTILIZE A DIGITAL COMPUTER TO CENTRALLY COORDINATE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. THE STATUS OF ALL 550 BUSES WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY UPDATED EVERY 11 SECONDS. THE SYSTEM WILL IDENTIFY EACH BUS INDIVIDUALLY, LOCATE IT ANYWHERE IT MAY BE IN THE ENTIRE CHICAGO AREA OF 300 SQUARE MILES, AND DETERMINE ITS ADHERENCE TO SCHEDULE. DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS TECHNIQUES WILL ALLOW EACH BUS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE CENTRAL CONTROL CENTER AND FOR THE CENTER TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH BUS INDIVIDUALLY. ROUTING STATISTICAL RECORD KEEPING WILL BE PERFORMED AS WELL. ALL OF THESE FUNCTIONS WILL BE PERFORMED WITHOUT ANY ROADSIDE EQUIPMENT AND UTILIZING ONLY ONE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS CHANNEL. /UMTA/
