Assessment of surface ravelling using traffic speed survey techniques
Ruts have been accurately measured at speed using lasers for over 15 years, but until very recently, ravelling has not been measured in the same way. High speed laser surveys can now be used to identify wheel-track surface ravelling on motorways and trunk roads. Research has recently been carried out into developing a method for the improved identification of surface disintegration across the whole width of the carriageway, and then to monitor it by means of annual surveys. Raw data were collected using profile lasers (25 lasers across a survey width of 3.3 m). Visual surveys were carried out on selected sites experiencing different types of disintegration, using 5m grids. The visual surveys were analysed together with the laser surveys, and an algorithm was developed. Correlation of the visual measurements to the laser measurements is progressing well, and a new ravelling parameter will be presented next year, after further tests have been performed. The paper will report on the results so far obtained, and show how this valuable new tool can be used in the maintenance of pavements, with intervention levels related to safety and serviceability.
