URBAN VEHICLE MONITORING: TECHNOLOGY, ECONOMICS, & PUBLIC POLICY, VOLUME 2: TECHNICAL ANALYSIS & APPENDICES
THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS OF TWO AUTOMATIC VEHICLE MONITORING SYSTEMS---THE DUAL-ODOMETER (DAVM) AND THE TRIANGULATION (TAVM) SYSTEMS---ARE REPORTED IN DETAIL. THE PRINCIPAL CRITERIA WERE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY AND ACCURACY. COST ESTIMATES WERE ALSO MADE. RESULTS ARE REPORTED UNDER EACH OF THE FOUR FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY AVM SYSTEMS: ACQUISITION OF LOCATIONAL DATA, COMMUNICATION, COMPUTATION, AND DISPLAY. AVM APPLICATIONS TO EXISTING AND FUTURE BUS OPERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO MONITORING OF DRIVER PERFORMANCE, REAL-TIME HEADWAY CONTROL, DYNAMIC REROUTING AND RESCHEDULING, AUTOMATIC COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF OPERATIONAL DATA, AND EMERGENCY REPORTING. EXTENSION OF THE AVM SYSTEM TO AIRCRAFT LOCATION IS DISCUSSED.
