ELECTRONIC AIDS FOR FREEWAY OPERATION

THIS REPORT CONSIDERS THE WAYS IN WHICH ELECTRONIC AIDS CAN BE USED TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC PERFORMANCE AND CONDITIONS ON FREEWAYS. SOME DETAILS OF TYPES OF DETECTORS, DATA TRANSMISSION, MEANS OF COMMUNICATION AND METHODS OF CONTROL ARE GIVEN. COMPLETE CONTROL SYSTEMS ALREADY IN OPERATION OR BEING INSTALLED ARE DESCRIBED BRIEFLY. THE POSSIBILITY FOR RESEARCH INTO THE EFFECTS OF THE USE OF ELECTRONIC AIDS, INCLUDING BEHAVIORAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS, ARE DISCUSSED. PROPOSALS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE MADE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: USE OR RESTRICTION OF CERTAIN LANES, CONTROL OF SPEEDS OR HEADWAYS, PREDICTIVE INFORMATION BEFORE USING THE FREEWAYS, RAMP METERING AND CORRIDOR CONTROL. /HSRI/
