Mobile retroreflectometers and asset management: find yourself data rich without ending up information poor
The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority has been utilising mobile retroreflectometers on a limited basis for some time. More recently, the technology has been utilised to provide performance data for a particular network area. Over one hundred thousand 25 metre average measurements of retroreflectivity were made during December 2009, by two separate providers of mobile retroreflectivity measurement services. Each measurement was accompanied with a set of longitude and latitude coordinates, allowing for georeferencing of the data. Coupled with the RTA's extensive asset dataset which accurately defines the location of every classified road in the state, the measured data was spatially joined to each underlying road. Using the RTA's performance based line marking specification (R145), a map of the network area, colour coded on the basis of condition, was generated using a geographic information system. This map provided an objective overview of the condition of the network, from which a maintenance schedule can be created. This is a significant step forward from previous scheduling techniques that have traditionally relied upon subjective performance data in the form of visual inspections.
